AZT PASSAGE 12 – ELDEN MOUNTAIN

Miles on this passage: 13.7 miles
Water availability: Walnut Canyon National Monument which is off trail & Schultz Tank which is muddy.

Information on this passage HERE.

Both trailheads at either end of this passage are easily accessible and we had no issues with them being closer to town. I did hike a weee bit of this passage on my solo section hike last year from Interstate 40 TH going Southbound.

Beautiful section, AGAIN. What’s not to like about the AZT.

Saturday:

We started at Schultz Pass Trailhead and hiked southbound then turned around after 8 ish miles for a 16.7 miles day. The hike was easy and beautiful. One nice thing about Arizona is that it is always sunny! Rarely does it rain so we don’t have to worry too much about bad weather. The Flagstaff area is around 7,000ft elevation so it snows in the winter.

Sunday:

We connected with Saturday’s out and back with a short 11.7 day hike from the Interstate 40 Trailhead. We followed a few jeep roads briefly but very quickly went back on actual trail. We had to go across the Interstate 40 but thankfully the trail went under so we didn’t have to dodge any traffic.

Tip: A nice little day hike for those who are looking for something close to town. You could always try to Uber from the trail to get a pint or two at the local breweries! 🙂
